Why We Love Designer Fragrances and Celebrity Scents

There can be no denying that, as Australians, we love celebrity fragrances. In the world of fashion, fragrances launched under celebrity names have become a common trend. The market is becoming flooded but perhaps not yet over-saturated with the designer perfumes.

Even after years, it has become no less exciting when a famous figure hints at the release of a new fragrance soon to be on our shelves. Celebrity endorsed scents are a $5 billion industry and it seems likely that this number will only continue to skyrocket.

A Brief History of the Famous Fragrance

This trend began in 1991 when Elizabeth Taylor released her widely publicised White Diamonds. Unsurprisingly, the past twenty-three years have done nothing to dim the radiance and popularity of this celebrity perfume. To date, the tiny glass bottles that bear her name have brought in over $1 billion and have prompted a slew of other famous faces to follow suit.

By the year 2012, almost eighty-five celebrity perfumes and colognes were launched and as a result of their growing popularity and demand, thirty-one of these counted amongst the world’s 100 top selling fragrances.

Today the designer fragrance industry in Australia is valued at $259 million with an annual growth rate of 17.1% on average over the past five years.

Perfumes Making Headlines In The News

Last month, none other than Kim Kardashian herself visited Australian shores to unveil her seventh perfume, Fleur Fatale – said to be both ‘dangerously alluring’ and ‘unavoidably tempting’ whilst reflecting her love for roses. This was to be the reality TV queen’s second trip Down Under in less than three months.

In a similar way, the Grammy award-winning country crooner Taylor Swift has also been making waves in Australia with the recent launch of her new perfume entitled Incredible Things. In contrast to Kardashian, Taylor’s fragrance consists of velvety petals and creamy woods, wrapped up in a veil of vanilla and musk and features her lucky number 13 on the golden cap.

What Celebrity Scents Represent

Over the year’s celebrity fragrances have come to embody the ideals of the famous and somehow tap into our aspirations of escapism. Being able to smell like our favourite fashionistas has proven to be an incredibly powerful and intimate way for us to catch a glimpse of the lifestyle.

One other factor that contributes in a big way to why we love designer fragrances and celebrity scents are the scents themselves – they often tend to smell sublime. And why wouldn’t they? We’ve come to expect a high degree of refinement in celebrity endorsed cosmetics which frequently hold a competitive edge over comparable perfumes.

There is no real mystery when it comes to why our preferences for fragrance are ever shifting towards those released and backed by the world’s most famous singers, actors and actresses, entertainers and designers. In addition to bringing fine fragrance and sophistication to our shopping centre aisles and online retail outlets, these scents seem poised to continue their upward momentum well into the future.
